Decades ago, isotonic drinks were prepared with sugars, such as glucose, fructose, or sucrose.

This has remained a common practice, as they are indeed effective sources of carbohydrates for developing isotonic formulas; however, their use has associated problems, for example:

If an isotonic drink has been developed exclusively with simple carbohydrates, its osmolal reactivity is very high, and this means that consumption, even in small amounts, produces digestive discomfort, diarrhea, and a series of other problems associated with increased intra-intestinal osmolality.

However, complex carbohydrates are more 'difficult' to manage since not all, or indeed most, of them are suitable for regular consumption during training.
